Moving to a new city forced me to create a simpler life

Hitting reset when you need it most.

--

Moving to a new city can be an exciting start.

It can be an opportunity not only to throw out physical things that no longer serve you, but it can be a way to hit the reset button in other parts of your life.

When you move to a new physical space, you can create new routine spaces that work for a new phase of life. You can focus your energy and attention on what works for you.

Moving to a new city is helping me reset and get a do-over of sorts.

4 Ways I Simplified My Life

Embrace Minimalism

Honestly, I have a lot of stuff.

I have moved around a few places over the last decade, but I have always had the privelege of space. I would put things in storage and forget about them. Then I would buy new things.

I didn’t realize that not only were these boxes of things taking up space in storage. But also in my brain and were impacting my mental capacity.

I always had the task of decluttering in the back of my mind. I needed to get to it, but there was no sense of urgency to do it.

This time, I threw out lots of things. Boxes of stuff I had saved over the years. Clothes I thought I would fit into, random stickers, and notebooks that I kept on accumulating. Scrapbooking supplies because I thought it was something I would get into eventually.

All the stuff was a lot. I hadn’t touched some of it in 7 years! This time, I only held onto momentos like concert tickets or photos—the things that I had memories I wanted to cherish.

Digital Declutter

Moving cities and countries is a great time to reevaluate all your subscriptions, where you store your photos, and where you store other important files.

We had to open new bank accounts and credit cards. We had to reevaluate where we were spending, what we were spending on, and how we had organized our finances.

The move has just made us reset some of our priorities. We would not have done any of this if we had been moving on…
